Mixed Palette: Art and Inclusion “Our Artists Are Our Greatest Strength”

In late 2017 I was the successful recipient of a CAN Catalyst professional development grant to undertake a mentorship in digital film-making. The purpose of the project was to learn digital-media videography skills so as to be able to create short professional quality digital films on community art projects that I am involved in.

The project was undertaken through a series of one-on-one skills development sessions with local digital film-maker Linda Blagg, and the application of these skills in a number of practical recording sessions with Mixed Palette Inc. – a disability-led arts group based in Rockingham, WA. This included a number of one-on-one interviews with key personnel.

The result is a 15-minute documentary on Mixed Palette Inc, ‘Art and Inclusion: Our Artists Are Our Greatest Strength,’ which continues to be utilised by the group for marketing, promotional and advocacy purposes.

In 2022 the documentary was entered into the ‘documentary’ category of the Rockingham-based ‘Rock the Boat Film Festival whereby it was a Finalist as well as Award Winner – see ‘Key Outcomes’ below for details.

What my clients say

“Watching this video made all of us emotional. It connected with us deeply and was so well put together. Susie managed to capture the essence of Mixed Palette Inc. and that is not an easy task. … The impact of this project seemed to go both ways, in offering something to us and in giving something intangible but unique back to both Susie and her mentor Linda. Thanks to both of them for their input and the connections they have created with us as a group.”

“[The video will] be a valuable tool when seeking future funding to highlight the vital role volunteer arts organisations and others have on the wellbeing of local communities.  Because the video has so clearly captured the essence of Mixed Palette, anybody whose interest is heightened by seeing the video itself only has to drop into the workshops to realise that this really is an accurate picture of its day-to-day activities. What you see in the video is what you get in real life experience.”

“In Susie’s connections with the four young women who feature in her video, I saw equality and mutuality and humour. She was conscientious in discharging her ethical responsibilities as a filmmaker, and importantly the young women trusted her and wanted to tell her their stories.  … What Susie [brings] to her work in Community Arts is a creative sensibility, initiative in taking the lead, the ability to persevere no matter what, conscientiousness in all things, and a sunny disposition. It was a pleasure to work with Susie and I hope we do it again one day.”

“Wow Susie you made me cry again … [the video was] so beautiful and such a fabulous promotion [of] this fantastic group of people… correction … as Bec said, family.”

“The brief [of the video] was to present the principles that Mixed Palette tries to present through its art workshops. Susie carried herself through that process in a professional manner while creating an atmosphere where everyone felt relaxed and able to give of their best. She then put in hours of personal time to edit and produce a 15 minute video that expresses the heart of the vision at Mixed palette and moves everyone who watches it as well as. What can I say! I think we are all the better for having worked with Susie.”
